MechTronix Becomes PD3
In January 2010, MechTronix Engineering changed its name to Pump Design, Development & Diagnostics, LLC (PD3), while continuing to provide reliable high efficiency design solutions for companies that manufacture pumps and pump systems as well as training engineers to properly design, apply and troubleshoot pumps and their related systems. PD3 also sells the software tools needed to create, analyze and test world-class pump systems.
“We changed our name to better communicate what we do,” states Greg Case, president and CEO of PD3. “Our name now says it all, that we are the experts in pump design, development and diagnostics.”
PD3 experts engineer and analyze pump designs for anything from small liquid cooled laptop chips to 48-inch pumps for water service and nuclear power plants and everything in between. The company works with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), the distribution chain and end users as well as other consulting companies.
The company, under Case’s leadership, also is one of just three in the world authorized to teach the US Department of Energy's (DOE) Pump System Assessment Training (PSAT) course and the Hydraulic Institute’s Pumps Systems Matter, Pump System Optimization (PSM PSO) course.

PD3 Sells Concepts NREC Software System
In September 2009, Concepts NREC (CN), a world leader in turbomachinery design, research, engineering and manufacturing, launched PUMP: 2010 initiative, a year-long activity to provide economic design strength to all pump companies. Through PUMP: 2010, CN is offering coordinated and comprehensive entry-level and advanced software and seminars for pump design requirements, including finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) as well as ongoing seminars focusing on critical design problems for the industry.
PD3 is an integral part of the CN PUMP: 2010 effort, assisting in seminars and selling the related software systems.
CN’s software product offerings, sold by PD3, combine standard industrial pump design methodologies for problems including radial, mixed flow and axial impellers with symmetric volute design features or diffusers or return channels/crossover vanes (bowl pumps) all within CN’s AxCent® module from its Agile Engineering Design System® 2009 (Agile™ 2009) software. In this suite, PUMPAL® is used to develop the preliminary meanline geometry and AxCent® enables rapid flow analysis of pumps through streamline curvature or high level CFD and FEA evaluations.
Go Green with Energy Efficient Audits
Everywhere you turn, you are hearing about “Going Green” or “Clean Tech.” One way to be green is to make the most of current technologies and systems. Increasing pump efficiencies by as little a few percent can yield dramatic energy (and cost) savings over the life of the system.
PD3 provides Energy Efficiency Audits designed to reduce your pumping costs. The average pump running in the field is 44% efficient, That means 56% of the input power is wasted. The culprit is often not low efficiency motors or pumps but equipment that is poorly sized for the system. Poor system controls, artificial friction, and improper pump selection could cost hundreds of thousands dollars in pump system energy costs. Often a pump system assessment can reveal simple changes to plant operations that reduce energy costs at little to no cost to the operator. PD3 also can help deal with local utility companies for rebates that may cover large portions of the installed costs of new properly sized equipment.

Did You Know?For 1800 RPM Pumps (only 1800 rpm pumps), if you take the impeller diameter in inches and square that number you will get the approximate shutoff head for that pump.
